early morning melbourne

Chris had some work in the city this morning so we drove in together. It was early, still before daylight and everything had a different feel about it. Somehow anticipatory and energetic, there's a vibrancy about the city as it comes to life.

We stopped in Flinders Lane outside Format Furniture where Chris is hanging an exhibition for an architect friend of his.

It's funny how everything in life seems inexplicably linked. I choose to believe that it's sign that I'm in the right place with the right people.

I knew Format from an evening that Kate Bezar, editor of Dumbo Feather, hosted there last year. John, the owner, brings together a beautiful, eclectic collection of furnishings in this great underground space. It's well worth a visit (125 Flinders Lane in Melbourne).

John recommended Breadwell (in the photo) just around the corner at no. 135 for coffee. We walked in and bumped into Paul, the owner and a friend. I had long intended to find his cafe but being at the other end of the city, just hadn't made the time. It's gorgeous. The coffee was great and while we didn't have time for breakfast, the food looked fabulous. Well worth a visit.

And it's right next door to my favourite Flinders Lane Gallery. This is by far my most loved part of the city.

What a serendipitous start to my day.

hi kate! i'm a city girl at heart and for me, there is no better time to be in a city than early morning....before majority of people are there. i first discovered this joy as a jetlagged tourist on my first visit to paris many years ago and it's something i savour whenever i get a chance. i'll be a regular reader of your blog, now i've discovered it. x shelley t

Kate:

What a lovely blog. I love how you see everything is linked and that you are with the right people. That to me was pure beauty.

The picture of you; what a beautiful smile.

Shelley - As much as I love wide open spaces, I'm a city girl at heart too. Paris in the morning sounds even more enticing!

Renee - I was reading a chapter about 'finding your pack' in 'Women Who Run with the Wolves' last night. When you find the right people and the right places, things seem so much more effortless. (and thanks re the smile comment!)

Hi Kate, thanks for finding and commenting on my blog! I'll check out the public speaking site too. I really love Breadwell as well, it is just around the corner from where I work. Isn't it exciting trying new cafes - I went to the Gasworks cafe in Port Melbourne for the first time today and that was lovely too. Great blog, I'm adding you to my faves. Kerry

Hello Kate.. what a lovely Melbourne story! I love that Melbourne is the perfect size to foster these kind of coincidences all the time!

It's nice to discover you have a blog... Even though we haven't met, your name has popped into my life a lot recently! I know Shelley at Galerie Montmartre, and have a good friend called Jess who you're working with currently? (budding film director). Also I work in TV in the art dept, and worked with Chris many times when I first started out doing TVCs. He was always so lovely and encouraging with me! Small world!

I hope our paths cross one day... I'm sure it's inevitable! Lucy :)
