favourite places

I love being at home. I'm actually more of a homebody than I generally like to admit. As much as I enjoy being out and about in Melbourne, I find myself drawn more and more to the nurturing environment of home.

Our house isn't big but it is an oasis. The sun comes into the back room in the afternoon so when I come to the kitchen to cook, it's always warm. The back garden is completely private and the trees that I brought home in my car fifteen years ago are now well established.

The grass is green again since Chris hooked up a pump and hose to the washing machine outlet - I can't believe how much I appreciate the transformation from the dust bowl it was not so long ago. The herbs are flourishing from their bed of sugar cane mulch and I'm getting back to the market each week to buy flowers and fruit that are in season.

There's firewood in the wood box ready for a few fires in winter and I'm digging out recipes for osso bucco and 'forty cloves of garlic chicken' (sounds outrageous I know, but it's divine). I've topped up the tea jars with my favourites - Irish Breakfast, Orange Pekoe, T2's Tummy Tea and Sleep Tight. If you've never had proper herbal leaf tea, you must try it. It's so much nicer than the dusty tea bag stuff!

And of course, it's where Chris, the girls and Poppy are.

Hi Kate,

I can really relate to your blog today. Although I am a vegetarian so not so sure about osso bucco. Lentil curry maybe!

Poppy is adorable. What sort of dog is she? When my Golden Retriever goes to heaven (she's 12) I am thinking of getting a smaller dog and Poppy is gorgeous.

Not a normal blog comment I know, although there is nothing better than sitting in front of a fire on a cold wet day.

I would love to know more about Chris' washing machine contraption! I have been lugging tubs of washing machine water out on my lawn.

Thanks for your comment Kate. Poppy is gorgeous - she is by far the best dog we've ever had. She's a Cavoodle (King Charles Cavalier/Poodle). She's smart and gentle, doesn't bark and loves nothing more than being curled up on your lap. My kinda dog!

Oh the washing machine contraption...what a saga. At the moment it consists of a diversion from the waste pipe, a big square tub to collect the water, a pond pump which is hooked up to power once the tub is full and a long hose that I have to move around the grass when the machine is on. Not the most sophisticated system but I'm happy cos the grass is green.

Chris keeps saying he'll devise something more effective one day but he's been a bit busy lately...

OK that made me laugh. At least it is automated - sort of. When he devises something let me know and I will pay him to come install it here! My grass is far from green or alive for that matter!

A cavoodle very very cute!

Thanks for your comment kj. You're so right...home is a place of pure contentment for me and it sounds like for you too.

I think the anticipation of a new season is one of life's simple but wonderful pleasures.

Morning Kate:

Of course you can use that poem from Mary Oliver. Absolutely.

And the words wild and prescious life aren't they beautiful?

I can't help look at the picture of you everytime I come here because you are absolutely gorgeous. You have the best smile.

Thanks for letting me know that was your daughter, she is amazing.

Love Renee xoxo
