people matter most

This week I had lunch with Shelley from Galerie Montmartre. She is one amazing woman.

Just over two months ago, Shelley arrived home to find her strong and healthy husband Stephan in a coma in the hallway of their house having suffered a massive brain bleed.

Stephan spent three weeks in intensive care and then another couple in the special care unit. He is now in rehab and will be for a month or two more. The road to a full recovery is promising but for all of the family (including their two beautiful little boys) it's been a huge and unexpected shock.

Throughout it all, Shelley has remained unbelievably calm and composed. Early on she made a decision that she'd share the journey openly with her blog readers and Facebook friends and the outpouring of support has been phenomenal.

Witnessing the way Shelley and her friends and family have handled this trauma has changed the way that I look at life.  I have been awestruck (as maybe she has been) by the unbelievable amount of love that's been sent her way. It has reminded me of just how good people are.

I am humbled by my visits to the hospital. When the people around us are well, we can easily forget about the suffering of others.

I've been reminded of the incredible power of a long standing loving commitment between two people. These two are a couple like no other couple I know.

And I have a new found respect for the people in this world who put other people first.

If you have a chance this week to put yourself out to show your support for someone you love, make sure you do it.
